If I Had to Start My Art Business Over Again, What Would I Do Differently?

It's been a little over a year since I took the leap and started running my art business full time. It's been a wild ride, full of ups and downs, but I wouldn't trade it for anything. I've learned so much along the way, and I'm still learning every day.

If I had to start my business over again, there are a few things I would do differently. Here are a few of the most important lessons I've learned:

  • Know your ideal customer. This is one of the most important things you can do as a business owner. When you know who your ideal customer is, you can make sure that your products and services are a good fit for them. You can also tailor your marketing and messaging to appeal to them specifically. When I first started my business, I was trying to sell my art to everyone. But the truth is, not everyone is my ideal customer. Once I realized who my ideal customer was, I was able to focus my marketing and sales efforts accordingly.

  • Price your art confidently. When I first started out, I was undercharging for my art (I'm still undercharging to be perfectly honest). I was afraid that if I priced my art too high, no one would buy it. But the truth is, if you want to make a living from your art, you need to price it confidently. Your art is worth what you say it is worth.

  • Network with other artists. Networking is a great way to meet new people, learn new things, and promote your work. I've attended art shows, workshops, and other events to meet other artists. I've also joined online communities and forums. Networking has been a great way to build relationships with other artists and support each other's work. It's also helped me to learn more about the art industry and get my work in front of a wider audience.

  • Build a strong online presence. In today's digital world, it's more important than ever to have a strong online presence. This means having a professional website and social media accounts where you can share your art and connect with potential customers.

My first year as a professional artist has been a rollercoaster of emotions, growth, and learning. If I had to start my business over again, I would center my efforts around understanding and catering to my ideal customer. I've realized that this not only makes the journey less confusing but also immensely rewarding.

Thank you for being part of this incredible artistic journey with me. I can't wait to create more beautiful art that celebrates our culture, our beauty, and our strength. Here's to many more years of inspiring and being inspired by each other.

With love and artistry,

Carla💖
