4 Tips on How to Hang Art

I'll admit, I've made some mistakes with hanging art in my home (an art piece too small for the wall? Not a good look). Just because I make art doesn't mean I know how to hang it properly. I'm an artist, not a designer 😆. But I've done my research and learned a thing or two about properly hanging art.  Here are some tips on how to make your art collection look its best on the walls of your home:

1.  Hang art about 6-8 inches above furniture.

This allows for  there to be a visual connection between the art and the furniture. Thus, your eyes will flow seamlessly from the furniture to the art without there being a sharp "pause"  in your line of vision.

2.    Art should fill 2/3 width of the furniture it is hanging above

Following a similar line of thought as tip #1, tip #2 helps to create a balance visually between the art piece and the furniture. If the piece is bigger than the furniture, it makes the whole look appear top heavy. If the piece is too small, the visual balance still appears off. It's like Goldilocks and the Three Bears - that 2/3 is juuust right 😉

3.    The center of the art should be 57-60 inches from the floor

Hanging the art at this height puts it at eye level for most people. That way, the art work can be enjoyed without someone straining their neck to see it. Of course, if your household is full of short people (like mine) or tall people, you may have to adjust this accordingly.

4.    Paired artwork should be 3-4 inches a part

When you have multiple pieces grouped together they need to look like they are grouped together. All the pieces should look connected. Keeping this rule of thumb in mind will help with that but also gives them a little space so they don't look crammed together either. When grouping different pieces of art together you should treat them as one piece of art.

I hope these tips will help you make your art look it's best in your home. Of course, rules are made to be broken. It's possible these tips won't work for everyone and that's perfectly fine! Do what you think looks best in YOUR home. You are the one that has to look at it everyday so make sure you love how it looks.
